Under Cover
Completed August, 2011 Two Pianos c. 4.45 minutes
Under Cover is a work for two pianos that juxtaposes layers of compositional transparency. This piece derives its pitch material from a single theme, which only surfaces muffled, in competition with extended technique. This central theme is consistently mutated through a process of re-harmonization, rhythmic manipulation, and even cascading runs that allude to 12-tone serialism.
Chorus
Caprice on an Etude of Carcassi
Completed April, 2011 For 3 guitars c. 5 minutes
This quirky composition, based on one of Carcassi's common guitar studies, is in a Theme and Variations form. This short etude is slowly transformed through different styles and various levels of complexity, ultimately culminating in a contrapuntal fugue.
Chorus is based on the idea of the electroacoustic effect of a "Chorus", in which a note is given a new timbre by creating detuned pitches around the fundamental pitch. In this composition, this technique manifests itself both discretely (namely through the use of minor 2nd dissonances) as well as continuously (in the use of an indeterminate, microtonal scordatura in the conclusion of the work).
